This episode of The Vampire Diaries was actually pretty freaking awesome. It starts out with Damon tied to a tree by one of the hunters of The Five. His name is Galen, and apparently his hunter’s mark filled in when Jeremy’s did.
Back with the gang, Elena calls Bonnie to tell her everything that happened, and to ask her to get the hunter’s sword from Klaus to help them decode the hunter’s mark from the pictures Bonnie took.
In the meantime, Shane pays off Jeremy’s kidnapper with the tombstone. Turns out, it was not even necessary to freeing Silas. It’s actually has Ketzia’s blood imbedded within it, which makes it more valuable than the Hope Diamond. Um, exsqueeze me?
In Mystic Falls, Tyler takes advantage of Klaus’ situation to rifle through his crap and finds the hunter’s sword. Caroline shows how sneakily brilliant she is, and explains that the handle of the sword is a cryptex, and it needs to be turned to and fro to get the symbols needed to decode the mark. Klaus looks proud and impressed, and Tyler looks insultingly shocked. Klaus suggests they get the best Aramaic to English dictionary they can find. Caroline is like fuck. Klaus taunts them because Aramaic is like, the deadest language ever. Then he says something in another language, sounding oh so sexy. Caroline asks him what he said, and he says, “If only you spoke Aramaic.” Oh, wait, my boo speaks Aramaic too? Hotter than ever.
On the island, Elena and Stefan talk about both wanting the cure, and she’s hurt that he didn’t tell her he wanted it for himself too. He tells her it wasn’t about her; it was about him. But maybe they can be friends. She agrees, and touches his hand, which Rebekah sees and is omega jealous. That can’t bode well for them.
In the falls, Klaus watches gleefully as Caroline and Tyler fail miserably at decoding the mark themselves. He finally decides to help. While he decodes the mark in Aramaic like a sexy beast, things are becoming clearer on the island, as well.
Over in kidnapped zone, Galen tells Damon that his plan is to kill Silas so that the mission of The Five can finally end. He wants to use the cure to kill Silas. The catch? There’s only one fucking dose! I knew it! I totally called it! It was too easy before.
Klaus is translating, and I can see when he finds out about the one dose, but he doesn’t tell Caroline and Tyler.
Meanwhile on the island, Bonnie and Jeremy are lowered into the well. When they land, Bonnie gets cut pretty deep, and bleeds all over the floor. It drips down through a crack on the floor and drops onto Silas’s dried up corpse. Ickles. Unaware of the shitstorm she just started, Bonnie promises that she won’t let Shane wake Silas up, and she will kill him if she has to.
Elsewhere, Damon accuses Galen of being the one who keeps saving Jeremy, but Galen denies it. They come across Shane’s accomplice all murdered, and realize someone else is on the island.
In the Falls, Caroline and Tyler call the island crew. Rebekah answers and Caroline tells her they decoded everything, and are sending the directions and map over to them via email. They’re on speakerphone, so when Rebekah thanks them, Klaus is like, actually, it was me. She doubts it, because she knows he doesn’t want her to be human. He tells her he wants her to live and die as she wants. He wants her to be happy, and stop hating him. And then, as quickly as he can, he speed confesses that there is only one dose so if she wants to take it she has to find it first. Caroline and Tyler try to end the phone call before he can finish but he gets the message across. They look at him in shocked anger, and he just shrugs and grins. ADORABLE! And totally self-serving, but shrug. I still count that as him being a good big brother.
When Rebekah goes back to Elena and Stefan, she tells them about the map, but keeps the one dose tidbit to herself. Later, when they reach a cliff and Elena jumps down ahead of them, Rebekah stops Stefan and admits the truth. She tells him she would consider giving it to him, but she wonders if he would just give it to Elena. He doesn’t answer fast enough, and she snaps his neck to knock him out. Elena sees it and jumps up to help him, but Rebekah is long gone. I kinda see her standpoint.
Down in the well, Bonnie starts witching Jeremy’s tattoo. As it activates, so does Galen’s, and he drags Damon behind him to get to the cave. When Jeremy’s tattoo activates, it starts a cave in. They’re ok, but rocks landed on Shane, breaking his leg. They totally abandon him there, and keep going. Galen and Damon get to the top of the well, and Damon gets himself free. Rebekah arrives, but the hunter gets the upper hand on both of them. He has a grenade that explodes stakes into her heart, and shoots some kind of death rope that traps Damon again.
Stefan wakes up and tells Elena about there only being one dose. She feels like giving up until they both realize that means Klaus will come after them. He needs to be the one to get the cure, so they get moving.
Just as the hunter drops down the well, Stefan and Elena arrive. Stefan frees Damon while Elena goes after the cure and Jeremy. Damon sends Stefan to help Elena get the cure, and stays to help Rebekah. He has clearly given up all hope, like a loser. Ugh. I don’t like this Damon. I have never liked Damon and Elena together, and these latest episodes are perfect examples of why. With Elena, Damon is a broken shell of himself. He is incredibly insecure, full of self-doubt and misery. This isn’t the Damon I love, it’s the broken shell that loving Elena made him. She makes Stefan better, but she makes Damon worse. Let Stefan and Elena be together, and find someone who will love Damon for who he is. Someone who will choose him because he’s amazing, and not as an afterthought or 2nd choice.
Anyway, while they are in the well, Bonnie sees her Gram. Her Gram tells her to free Silas so they can be a family again. Jeremy realizes what’s going on, and they figure out that Silas is creating these hallucinations to get people to do their bidding.
At the Gilbert house, Caroline asks Klaus not to kill Tyler. Klaus asks Caroline if she really wants the cure. Because he doesn’t think she does. He thinks she likes being strong and fearless, and ageless. He insists that they’re the same. She doesn’t argue. She justs asks him to show her by showing Tyler the mercy that she would show him. He agrees. He tells her to tell him to leave and hide somewhere he will never find him. Caroline looks relieved and turns to leave. He ruins her moment immediately by telling her that the mercy is he extending to him for her sake, is allowing Tyler a head start, before he murders the ever-loving crap out of him. She looks shattered, and goes to tell Tyler. They share yet another heart-breaking goodbye. I can’t help but think Tyler is a pussy. He is always running away like a loser. Whatever, I’m glad to see him go. Sadly, Bonnie is devastated. She makes Tyler promise to live a happy life without her because he may never be able to return. He promises and then leaves.
While exploring the cave, Elena sees someone off camera and freaks out, before she’s tackled. Oh Lord. She sucks at being a badass vampire.
Further in the cave, Bonnie and Jeremy approach Silas’ body. They try to wrestle the cure from his hand, noting that it seems awful small to heal so many vamps. They can’t get it free, and Bonnie realizes they need to wake him up in order to get the cure.
Just then, Galen arrives and stabs Bonnie in the back. Galen and Jeremy fight, but Galen gets the upperhand and is about to murderize Jeremy, when Elena shows up and saves him. She is about to kill him when Jeremy reminds her of the hunter’s curse. She knocks him out instead.
In the Falls, Klaus is able to leave the house because Bonnie is severely injured. When he goes outside, Bonnie jumps up like she’s scared, but he tells her not to worry because he would never hurt her. Um, he totally almost killed her the night before, but not important. She tells him that he’s done enough. He agrees. He has done enough. He’s shown pity, mercy, kindness, and forgiveness. It was all for her. He waits, hoping she will say something, but she just stares at him. He looks disappointed and a little frustrated, and leaves her staring after him.
Stefan is walking through the cave, when he finds a beaten Elena. Oh shit! Obviously, that means it was Katherine who saved Jeremy. Jeremy wants to help Bonnie, but Katherine insists on getting the cure. When he argues with her, she tells him she forgot how annoying he could be, and then grabs him and cuts his arm to feed Silas. Silas starts to wake up and grabs Jeremy by the neck and starts feeding from him in earnest. When he grabs Jeremy, Katherine snatches the cure and bounces. While Bonnie watches helplessly, Jeremy struggles fruitlessly against Silas’ grip, until he snaps Jeremy’s neck. The show ends with Jeremy falling slow motion to the ground, and Bonnie watches, unable to do anything to stop it.
